The CHANEL date code says a lot about your bag. In this post, we show you everything you can learn from it and how.

The CHANEL date code

The CHANEL date code says more about your bag than just when it was made. While it can help you identify what era or even year the bag was produced, it is also a unique code that is specific to that particular bag. It is also a very helpful detail for authenticators to determine whether a given bag is real CHANEl or fake, which is particularly helpful when shopping the second hand market.

History of the CHANEL date code

CHANEL introduced date codes, also referred to as serial numbers or hologram stickers, in their bags in the mid-1980s. Ever since then, this unique identifier has been added in every bag, wallet, purse, and a variety of other items produced by the French fashion house.

When was my CHANEL bag produced?

The date code will help you determine the age of your CHANEL bag. The system is as follows:

Bags produced in 2020 feature an 8-digit date code that starts with 30, i.e. 30XXXXXX.

Similarly, bags produced in 2019 feature a date code that starts with 27, 28, or 29.

A unique identifier for your bag

More so than a date code, the small hologram sticker is actually a serial number that is unique to your particular bag. That means no other piece carries that specific number – that is, of course, no other authentic bag carries that specific number. Counterfeiters are attempting to copy these hologram stickers and they have no scruples using other pre-existing numbers, unfortunately.

The date code and authenticity card

When purchased first hand at a CHANEL store, each bag is issued with an authenticity card. This card features a code that matches the serial number inside the bag.

A lot of people think that when buying a pre-loved CHANEL bag, you cannot guarantee the authenticity of the bag if it does not come with the authenticity card. This is not true. Few people buy a new CHANEL bag thinking they will sell it at some point down the line, so these cards often get disposed of or misplaced with time. Although they can be helpful to the authentication process, they are by no means a necessity for experts to tell whether a given bag is real or fake.

Determine the authenticity of your CHANEL bag

As mentioned earlier in this post, the date code can help you determine whether a given bag is indeed authentic CHANEL or is in fact a dupe. It is important to note that you cannot determine the authenticity of a bag from looking at the serial number alone, even though it is one of the most helpful indicators that authenticators can go by. As counterfeiters are becoming better and better at creating almost 1-to-1 copies, it is simply not enough to look at one detail alone.
